NEW YORK, NY—Mayo giant Hellmann’s, which is owned by consumer goods conglomerate Unilever, has officially won over Twitter with its Cinco de Mayonnaise tweet.
The tweet, which features an image of Hellmann’s mayonnaise product lineup decked out in sombreros, invites Twitterers to “Meet our familia.”
At the time of publication, Hellmann’s tweet has been liked more than 1.1 million times and been retweeted nearly a million times—an especially impressive feat for a brand with less than 33,000 followers.
According to Hellmann’s social media chief Rory McMayo, the company has been planning for this tweet since May 6, 2016 and is very pleased with the response. “We know that Cinco de Mayonnaise is a very important holiday for our Mexican and American customers and we wanted to do something really special,” he told Daily Bamboo.
He had a simple message for all the Twitter users who have embraced the tweet: “¡Muchas, muchas gracias!”
